Chapter Six

Miles

“Take my chances,” Kelsey repeated. “Fine. Let’s get out of here.”

I followed her out of the alley and across the street to her car. She stumbled to the passenger side and I asked for the keys.

She hesitated but then tossed them to me.

I drove out of the parking lot and glanced at the alleyway we were just in. The men were no longer there, but I didn’t see them on the streets.

“Where are they?” Kelsey asked.

“I don’t know,” I said.

“I hope they’re not following us.”

“It will be at their own peril if they do.”

“Why didn’t you just stop them back there?”

She was beautiful even when she was angry and I yearned to make her mine. But her safety came first.

“Too many witnesses,” I said. “I am not permitted to reveal myself to humans.”

She snorted. “Could have fooled me.”

“I don’t understand your meaning.”

“Bran revealed himself to me.”

“Ah, yes, that’s different. You can be trusted.”

“Oh really? What makes you think I won’t tell someone?”

“Because that’s not who you are.”

“There’s no way you can know that after one night with me.”

“I trust you.”

“Well, you shouldn’t.”

“Why is that?”

“Because you don’t know me.” Kelsey peered out the window, watching me pass her street. “You’re going the wrong way.”

“I can’t take you home.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t want that man following you there.”

She sat back in her seat, but didn’t object. “You think he would?”

“Possibly.”

I stared in the rearview mirror, looking for the vermin who dared to lay hands on my mate. It was fortunate that I kept vigilant of her even though Craggnon cautioned against it. She wasn't receptive when he made an appearance at her apartment and I suspected she would be just as displeased by my sudden appearance. Yet I came anyway.

What would have happened had I not been there?

“Something could have happened to you,” I said. “Why didn’t you return home after work?”

“Because I didn’t want to run into Craggnon again.”

“You asked him not to be there and he adhered to your request.”

“Well, I thought he might be there anyway given that you all seem to have the propensity to show up.”

“You have nothing to fear. Surely you know that now.”

She relaxed a bit in her seat. “You did save me back there, but I don’t owe you anything.”

“I never said you did.”

“Good. Agreed.”

I turned down the street leading to our beach house. “I think you should stay with us for the night.”

“Alone.”

“No, we will be sleeping in the house as well. However, we do have a guest room that you’re welcome to use.”

“Thank you.”

“Of course,” I said, pulling into the driveway.

We exited the car and upon entering, Branvar and Craggnon were waiting for us.

“Water lily,” Craggnon said. “Are you hurt?”

“Beloved,” Branvar said. “Welcome.”

“Hold it,” Kelsey said. “Not one more step.”
